Engines

Suter Industries

Suter Industries AG produces UAV engines that were co-developed with Compass Aviation Engines GmbH (CAE GmbH).   Suter’s roots go back to the motorcycle racing era of the 1990s. Eskil Suter was a successful Grand Prix racing driver and founded the Suter Racing company in 1996. The company is known for their “SuterClutch” and other products for the motorcycle racing market including high-performance engines, motorcycles and various components.  In 2015, Suter Racing launched a four-cylinder 2-stroke racing motorcycle that was developed and produced in house including the Suter500 2-stroke engine. Since 2002 Suter has applied their expertise gained from the motorcycle racing market to develop products for other markets including automotive, aerospace and defense.  The Suter/CAE collaboration and development of UAV engines is one of the new products coming out of Suter Industries.

CAE GmbH is lead by Dietrich Kehe who is a mechanical engineer with over 24 years’ experience in manned and unmanned 2-stroke aircraft engines.  He received his engineering degree with a focus on combustion engines from the University of Hochschule für Technik – Esslingen (Stuttgart, Germany area).   Dietrich has developed clean sheet engine designs for advanced UAV applications utilizing advanced electronic fuel injection (including direct injection) technology.   These include complete propulsion systems with integrated starter-generators, engine mounts and belt/gear reduction drive systems.   These solutions are flying on some of the world’s most advanced UAV applications.  Dietrich also has an understanding of the supply base required to design/produce advanced 2-stroke engines and teamed with Suter Industries to be the development and production partner to bring a new line of advanced UAV engines to the global market.  The first engine to be developed by the Suter/CAE team is the Suter 288 engine which is a twin cylinder, horizontal opposed, air cooled, two cycle engine, with fuel saving electronic engine management system and a 1kW starter/generator. Displacement is 288cm3.   Power: 13.3kW (18HP) @5700rpm, 17.5kW (24HP) @6500rpm.  All engines are produced in Switzerland and are 100% tested and supplied with a certificate of conformance.  The engine has automatic altitude and temperature calibration and runs on gasoline.  A heavy fuel variant will be available in the future.

Gimbals

MERIO is located in Saint-Restitut, France and designs and produces a range of gyrostabilized gimbals as well as image acquisition and processing chain.

The TEMIS range, which development started in 2016 represents Merio know how in terms of compact design for aerial platforms, integrating high quality sensors in order to provide high performance observation capability.

From less than 300g up to 5kgs, the TEMIS range provides adapted solutions for mini-drones, tactical drones, light aircraft, helicopters, aerostats…

These gimbals can also be integrated on ground or naval systems. MERIO offers also video acquisition and processing with on-board modules and software for real-time image processing, with target detection and tracking, mapping functions (geo localisation, geo tracking…)…

Motors / Generators

ePropelled has the broadest range of electric power systems and propulsion systems.

ePropelled high-performance systems feature:

  • unique cooling technology to enable UAVs to fly higher in thinner air

  • best-in-class power and thrust-per-weight ratio

  • smarter systems—using standards-based CAN—that provide access to all sensor data

The electric power systems family includes:

  • Starter generators (SG)

  • Intelligent power systems (iPS)

  • Electronic engine starters (EES)

These modular components can be matched to meet your mission requirements and supply from 500 watts to 12 kW electrical power.

The electric propulsion systems family includes:

  • Propulsion motors, ranging from 500 watts to 20 kW (PM)

  • Matching motor controllers (iAMC)

The systems are designed and built in the United States for commercial, security, and defense uses, and meet the needs of the most demanding applications. Standard products are available off the shelf to simplify your build process, but designs can be altered according to your specific requirements.

Hybrid Ready

ePropelled is the first vendor to enable hybrid-mode operations of a UAV power system, working with internal combustion engines to provide electrical power to the aircraft. The power systems offer UAV designers the unique option to optimize engine size while using the battery for range extension, emergency landing, or power assist on takeoff.

Starter Generators

ePropelled starter generators (SGs) provide the power generation of an alternator but have enough torque to start the engine from the onboard battery. They allow for extended flight time, reduced noise, and increased power, and can support hybrid applications.

Benefits to UAVs powered by internal combustion engines:

  • Power assist—sufficient power to assist the internal combustion engine. The engine can then be sized for steady flight rather than exclusively for peak power requirements.

  • Range extension—battery power to extend flight time or land the aircraft in the event of a fuel emergency.

  • Reduced noise—convert to electric power temporarily to reduce the noise of internal combustion engines.

ePropelled starter generators can be paired with intelligent power systems (iPS) and electronic engine starters (EES) for the smartest onboard systems in the industry.

Electronic Engine Starters

ePropelled electronic engine starters (EES) allow the starter generator to function as a battery-powered motor for hybrid applications. It also monitors input and output voltage as well as current levels and collects and reports the data via the CAN interface.

Aircraft and power system designers can create custom applications via the open application programming interface (API) and thresholds can be set for alerts and alarms based on specific uses and mission profiles.

ePropelled electronic engine starters are available in two sizes: 3000 W and 6000 W.

Intelligent Power Systems

ePropelled intelligent power system (iPS), also known as power management unit (PMU), is a complete power management solution that provides steady regulated DC power for onboard avionics, servo, and payload requirements by converting the 3-phase sinusoidal AC voltages from the starter generator. Among other benefits, the iPS is designed to:

  • Ensure high efficiencies of up to 93.5% (load dependent)
  • Offer configurable electronic engine starter (EES) parameters for different internal combustion engines
  • Support a wide range of applications across several sectors where consistent and reliable power management is required
  • Provide an array of real-time performance and operational data for a range of applications and analytics

The onboard battery is versatile and can power EES functions or provide power to outputs if 3-phase generator power is lost. Additionally, the iPS provides onshore DC power for all features including EES function, output power, and onboard battery charging.

ePropelled intelligent power systems are available in a wide range of sizes and power (from 750 W to 12 kW).

ePropelled intelligent air motor controllers (iAMCs) are the most innovative electronic speed controllers (ESCs) on the market, designed to enable advanced electric propulsion systems for the most demanding applications.

They are designed to:

  • be lightweight with outstanding power density
  • transform DC input voltage into a 3-phase AC output voltage
  • sense minute changes in the motor’s direction, acceleration, and other parameters, and then automatically adapt to them for optimized stability and control precision

The iAMCs are available in a wide range of sizes and power.
